For this mini wall quilt, let’s start from the back and work our way towards the front, adding texture as we go!

EXPLORE SURFACE DESIGN AND MAKE A MODERN WALL QUILT, WITH TEXTURE!

6 hours: This is a fun way to explore texture and surface design by making a small modern wall quilt. I’ll guide you through the steps of working within a limited palette to quickly build in texture and layers of stitching.

Workshop Overview

Let’s start from the back! Prep your base materials by cutting backing and batting to size.

Make hanging tabs. Cut one piece of backing fabric, and I will show you how to make two fabric tabs to hang the mini quilt.

Cut fabric for the front. Working with a limited palette, choose various textured fabrics, printed and woven. Include a good range of light to dark. The more variety, the better! I’ll show you how I make strip sets to ramp up the texture.

Stitch strips right onto the raw batting! Start from one end and work across, overlapping right sides together. Experiment with leaving some raw fabric edges showing.

Add some machine and hand quilting. This is the fun part, like drawing with thread! We will do a little machine quilting first, couch down some textured yarn, and then add a bit of hand stitching, too.

Enjoy a fast finish! Position the tabs at the top, and stitch down. Then put the backing on top of the quilt front: stitch around the perimeter, leaving an opening. Turn right side out, press, top stitch… and enjoy!

You will leave the workshop with a finished mini wall quilt, and tons of ideas for adding more texture and surface design to your next project. Bring your materials and your spirit for quilting adventure! I will provide full hands-on instructions in class. This is an all-levels workshop. Basic knowledge of walking foot machine quilting is helpful, but not necessary. We will learn together!

A complete PDF supply list will be provided. Class sizes are limited to ensure one-on-one time. This is an all-levels workshop. Basic knowledge of walking foot machine quilting is helpful, but not necessary. We will learn together!
