Three days, three projects, all inspired by Japanese textile traditions, with a modern spin. These three workshops are available to book as a virtual event for your guild!
Day 1: Inspired by Japanese Art
Starting with a favorite work of art, develop your own unique design. Be inspired by shapes, colors, structure, or feelings and design a block or whole quilt with an eye on modern minimalism.
Bring your own photo of a work of art, and we will explore the many ways you can take inspiration from it to develop your own quilt block or full quilt design. Japanese woodblock prints are particularly inspiring. We will break down the image to its most basic elements, create a rough drawing, then start building a test block using improv techniques. David will demonstrate sewing curves without pins, and without fear.
Day 2: Little Gifts — Temiyage
Celebrate the Japanese custom of gift-giving by making these quilted eyeglasses cases, featuring a snap purse style closure.
In this fun and fast-paced class, you will create two snappy and stylish quilted eyeglass cases using the quilt-as-you-go method. Turn ordinary retractable measuring tape into the closure mechanism. Explore color choice and composition for an attractive result. A fully detailed pattern is provided, so you can make snappy cases for all your family and friends. The pattern is easily adaptable to other sizes: make a snap purse for your scissors, pens, or other sewing tools.
Day 3: Indi-Go-Modern
The lure of indigo is strong — the classic blue and white combination found in many Japanese textiles is cool, crisp, and so appealing.
From classic kimonos to denim jeans, indigo has been used by many cultures for dyeing cloth, and the Japanese have refined the use of indigo to an art form. This is the class to use all those lovely blue and white shibori fabrics you’ve dyed yourself, or carefully curated fabrics from your stash. We will develop a simple geometric block design based on unfolded origami shapes, set a theme and create variations, and combine them into the beginning of a fresh and modern quilt. (Optional blue & white fabric kits available for purchase for $45.)
