All of the blocks for this quilt were abstract design ideas taken from one photograph of architecture, then sewn using the quilt-as-you-go method.

I started with a photo I took at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, CO.

After making several simple thumbnail sketches based on my photo, I then enlarged the sketches to 12″ x 12″ and created a pattern for each unit. I then machine pieced the units, fully quilting each individually. This quilt-as-you-go technique allowed me to add lots of walking foot quilting texture to each unit.

After the units were complete, I was able to experiment with how they worked together, creating connections and secondary shapes.

Details
These detail photos show what I call layered walking foot quilting, where I use several colors of thread to machine stitch overlapping motifs. After quilting, the units are joined with gussets, which add an additional linear element.

My quilt labels are inkjet printed, and I have a lecture called Quilt Labels to Love! which quilt guilds can book as a virtual or in-person event. I also teach two workshops related to this quilt: Inspired by Architecture and Layered Walking Foot Quilting.

“Do you wish to be great? Then begin by being. Do you desire to construct a vast and lofty fabric? Think first about the foundations of humility. The higher your structure is to be, the deeper must be its foundation.”
SAINT AUGUSTINE
Kōzō (Structure) is not available for purchase, but I do take commissions to create quilts like this one. To discuss a commission, contact me and please mention the name of this quilt in your message. I deliver to the Seattle area, and ship artwork unframed within the U.S.
