Translucence, opacity, light and dark — these are things I’m constantly exploring in my textile artwork, be they paper quilts or those made with fabric. In this piece, I combined photos I took in Tokyo with scientific imagery. I like the feeling of positive/negative, of movement, light and shadow. This piece looks quite different depending on the lighting, especially when lit from behind.
This piece was featured in a solo show I had at the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum in La Conner, WA, in the summer of 2023. I created it with the windows of the museum in mind, to take advantage of light coming through:

It was a fun challenge to use these unconventional materials in a piece of stitched artwork. I’ll admit, it was not easy sewing the plastic CD sleeves together into a grid, but I finally made it work by using monofilament in my sewing machine.
The pockets of the CD sleeves allowed me to fine-tune the overall composition by moving the individual paper collages around until I was happy with the results.
