IN-PERSON RETREAT: Modern Abstract Quilts
WOODLAND RIDGE RETREAT: This is a rare opportunity to take my very popular Modern Abstract Quilts workshop in a multi-day retreat format! You will finish a series of a small quilts, and maybe even a larger quilt in the time we have together.
FIVE DAYS TO EXPLORE MODERN MINIMAL QUILT DESIGN
Day 1: Explore composition and design using paper and machine stitching. We will stitch a variety of mini quilt designs on paper employing simple, modern, minimal shapes. Try out your mini paper designs in photos of modern interiors to see how scale and proportion are working. Plan for the quilting lines to be a major design element. Discuss color and value and choose a palette of fabrics for Day 2.
Day 2: Using one of your paper quilts as a roadmap, David will guide you through the steps to translate your ideas into a mini fabric quilt. We will use the quilt-as-you-go method. David will demonstrate face binding your quilt, which gives a modern finish, as well as how to join multiple quilted blocks. Your mini quilt can be the final product (frame it, hang it, or make a pillow cover later) or a test design for the remaining retreat days.
Days 3 – 5: Continue making mini fabric quilts as individual pieces, working in a series, or scale up one of your minimalist designs to create a 36 x 36 inch wall quilt… or larger! Explore the balance between modern abstract piecing combined with thoughtful quilting, using your walking foot. Completely finish and bind your modern quilt by the end of our time together.
This workshop is a five-day in-person event. We will have the luxury of nearly a week of workshop time to design and develop a beautiful modern quilt (or a series) in a gorgeous setting.
Woodland Ridge Retreat is hosting this workshop at their beautiful facility in the Red Cedar River Valley of Western Wisconsin. Woodland Ridge Retreat is a place to create with the comforts of a luxury hotel. Workshops are limited to 12 participants for lots of one-on-one time.
