Welcome! I’m David Owen Hastings.

I’m a quilter, graphic designer, print and textile artist, and the 2020 President of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. I create richly-layered contemporary artwork and modern minimal quilt and textile designs. For over 20 years, I’ve exhibited my stitched paper artwork in galleries and juried shows, and worked exclusively with nonprofit organizations on their branding and communications.

My creative approach to modern quilting has led to a busy schedule of workshops and lectures on quilting, branding for artists, fine art and textile techniques. Sharing knowledge, encouraging creativity, and teaching new skills are personal passions. I also love to travel, especially in Asia, and enjoy sharing my experiences and inspiration through travel photos and stories.

My dance card has been chock full of lectures and My dance card has been chock full of lectures and workshops with guilds all over the country, I feel so blessed! 2021 is starting off with a bang, and I really love all the interaction I have with my students, even if we are doing it all virtually from our own homes. On Tuesday, Jan. 26th, 2021 the Charlotte Modern Quilt Guild @cltmqg is hosting me and my lecture, “Minimal Design, Maximum Impact.” The modern quilting movement is evolving and changing, but one thing remains consistent: simple, spare design combined with thoughtful quilting make an outstanding combination. In this talk, I give an overview of my process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquette). I show examples of how I also take inspiration from architecture. The techniques I present are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs, and I share my approach to walking foot quilting as well. “Minimal Design, Maximum Impact” is meant to provide inspiration for people who might are intrigued by the modern, minimal esthetic, but don’t know how to get started. Guests are welcome at this talk for a small fee. Details for attending are on the Charlotte Modern Quilt Guild website: http://charlottemodernquiltguild.blogspot.com #modernquiltdesign #minimalquiltdesign #modernminimalism #charlottemqg #cltmqg #charlottemodernguild #charlottenc #showusyourmqg #modernquilt #walkingfootquilting #minimaldesign #minimalism #modernquilter #menwhoquilt #virtualquiltlecture
Relax. Breathe. Look up! My daily walks with ou Relax. Breathe. Look up!
My daily walks with our dog Ally feed my soul and help me to breathe a little easier. I play classical music on my headphones and try to just be in the moment.
I’m fascinated by the infinite variety of the sky, it’s especially dramatic in the Pacific Northwest at this time of year. Look up, what do you see?
I hope you can get out and take a walk today, and enjoy a little peace and time for contemplation.

I had so much fun making these quilted wine totes! I had so much fun making these quilted wine totes! They are just the right size for a bottle of sparkling wine, or for your reusable water bottle if that is more your jam. They feature light canvas by Cotton & Steel and quilting cotton by Marcia Derse. I love the way these fabrics work together! I decided to add a strap to make it a reusable item. I made these wine totes as a donation to the Port Townsend School of the Arts @ptschoolofthearts (where I am a teaching artist) and Northwind Arts Center @northwindarts (where I will be in a join show next year with 3 artist friends). These two arts organizations are merging, and are hosting their first joint event called WEAVE IT TOGETHER. It is a virtual fundraiser with silent and live auctions of original works of art, jewelry, unique gift baskets, raise the paddle, and more! I do not make these wine totes to sell, BUT you can have the opportunity to get one as a VIP ticket holder for WEAVE IT TOGETHER. Just purchase a VIP ticket and, first come first served, you will get your choice of wine totes made by local artists… including a bottle of sparkling wine! Get tickets to WEAVE IT TOGETHER by visiting https://ptschoolofthearts.org or https://northwindarts.org Tickets are $25, or $75 for VIPs. Support the arts, and the artists, by attending this online event! Bidding opens 11.23.2020 and closes 12.06.2020. There is a live virtual gala on 12.06.2020 to celebrate the merger of these two wonderful organizations. #ptschoolofthearts #porttownsendschoolofthearts #northwindartscenter #pnwartist #porttownsendartist #weaveittogether #quiltedwinetote #marciaderse #marciadersefabric #cottonandsteel #cottonandsteelfabric
