Welcome! I’m David Owen Hastings.

I’m a quilter, graphic designer, print and textile artist, and was the 2020 President of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. I create richly-layered contemporary artwork and modern minimal quilt and textile designs. For over 20 years, I’ve exhibited my stitched paper artwork in galleries and juried shows, and worked exclusively with nonprofit organizations on their branding and communications.

My creative approach to modern quilting has led to a busy schedule of workshops and lectures on quilting, branding for artists, fine art and textile techniques. Sharing knowledge, encouraging creativity, and teaching new skills are personal passions. I also love to travel, especially in Asia, and enjoy sharing my experiences and inspiration through travel photos and stories.

I’m getting my creative batteries recharged this I’m getting my creative batteries recharged this week at QuiltCon Together! #helloquiltcontogether ! I’m David Owen Hastings, a modern quilter and teacher from Washington state, and this is my third QuiltCon. It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, we were enjoying QuiltCon in person and then the world changed forever! One good thing to come of the pandemic is all the virtual learning opportunities, and QuiltCon Together is one of the best. Last night, I enjoyed watching Daisy Aschehoug @warmfolk teach bogaji-inspired patchwork, then participated this morning in a live Q&A session with Daisy and a dozen other quilters. Daisy came to us virtually from her studio near Oslo, Norway! I really enjoyed learning the process of hand piecing, ending up with completely enclosed seams. Next I’m trying a quarter-square curve block to see how that goes. I’ve been wanting to try a hand piecing technique and this one really spoke to me, especially the way Daisy presented it so clearly. Thanks, Daisy! And thank you Heidi Parkes @heidi.parkes and your thoughtful presentation about Habits: it was the perfect lecture to enjoy while hand stitching! Looking forward to learning and expanding my quilting/sewing skills and habits further this week through the virtual event. #quiltcontogether #quiltcon #daisyaschehoug #heidiparkes #handsewing #handpiecing #bogaji #bogajipatchwork #seattlemqg #seamqg #menwhosew

My dance card has been chock full of lectures and My dance card has been chock full of lectures and workshops with guilds all over the country, I feel so blessed! 2021 is starting off with a bang, and I really love all the interaction I have with my students, even if we are doing it all virtually from our own homes. On Tuesday, Jan. 26th, 2021 the Charlotte Modern Quilt Guild @cltmqg is hosting me and my lecture, “Minimal Design, Maximum Impact.” The modern quilting movement is evolving and changing, but one thing remains consistent: simple, spare design combined with thoughtful quilting make an outstanding combination. In this talk, I give an overview of my process for coming up with simple graphic quilt designs, starting with stitched paper models (called maquette). I show examples of how I also take inspiration from architecture. The techniques I present are also great for making unique modern quilt block designs, and I share my approach to walking foot quilting as well. “Minimal Design, Maximum Impact” is meant to provide inspiration for people who might are intrigued by the modern, minimal esthetic, but don’t know how to get started. Guests are welcome at this talk for a small fee. Details for attending are on the Charlotte Modern Quilt Guild website: http://charlottemodernquiltguild.blogspot.com #modernquiltdesign #minimalquiltdesign #modernminimalism #charlottemqg #cltmqg #charlottemodernguild #charlottenc #showusyourmqg #modernquilt #walkingfootquilting #minimaldesign #minimalism #modernquilter #menwhoquilt #virtualquiltlecture
Relax. Breathe. Look up! My daily walks with ou Relax. Breathe. Look up!
My daily walks with our dog Ally feed my soul and help me to breathe a little easier. I play classical music on my headphones and try to just be in the moment.
I’m fascinated by the infinite variety of the sky, it’s especially dramatic in the Pacific Northwest at this time of year. Look up, what do you see?
I hope you can get out and take a walk today, and enjoy a little peace and time for contemplation.
