Portrait of David Owen Hastings

Hi, I’m David Owen Hastings.

I’m a graphic designer, gallery artist, and modern quilter. In my design office, I work exclusively with nonprofit organizations, helping them with their branding and graphic design projects. In my art studio, I create richly-layered contemporary art pieces and modern quilt and textile designs. Sharing knowledge, encouraging creativity, and teaching new skills are personal passions: I give lectures and workshops on branding, art and textile techniques. I love to travel, especially in Asia, and enjoy sharing my experiences through travel photos and stories.

Happy Autumn! 🍁 良い秋を! I love the way Happy Autumn! 🍁 良い秋を!
I love the way colors, especially warm ones, burst forth at this time of year. The low light makes everything glow! 🏮
Here’s a new quilt in progress. I started with a little sketch, then pulled special vintage Japanese fabrics from my stash. It’s a mix of antique cotton, ramie, and wool kimono fabrics. Then I threw in some contemporary quilting cottons and a piece of Thai silk. Can you spot the @marciaderse pattern?
Sign up for my e-newsletter for more details, I hope to finish this soon! There’s a sign-up form on my website: ➡️ link in bio. 😇

It’s so peaceful to walk around the garden in the low early morning light. You never know what you’ll see… perhaps you’ll catch a beneficial visitor, like this mantis!

I’m chuckling to myself about this silly photo, I’m chuckling to myself about this silly photo, taken at my solo exhibition in the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum @qfamuseum in La Conner, WA. 😂 My shirt matches my art! 🤣
I had such a great several days there, first teaching my Modern Abstract Quilts workshop, then judging the International Quilt and Fiber Arts Festival with my friend Brandy Maslowski, @quilteronfire who is a multi-talented speaker, teacher, and certified quilt show judge. Brandy also hosts a wonderful podcast and leads textile tours to fabulous places!
What a treat to judge this show with a pro like Brandy, from whom I learned so much. 🙏🏼🙏🏿🙏🏻🙏🏾🙏🏿
Mark your calendar for Oct. 6-8, 2023 and come see the show! Besides a gorgeous collection of quilts, fiber and wearable art, there are multiple workshops, a vendor hall, and you can join me for a guided tour of highlights the morning of Friday, Oct. 6.

A few hurried snaps from a weekend of teaching my A few hurried snaps from a weekend of teaching my “Modern Abstract Quilts” workshop to a wonderful bunch of artists! 👏🏽👏🏿⭐️👏🏾👏🏽
Thanks to @qfamuseum for hosting me, and thank you to the intrepid and adventurous people who participated! 🙏🏽
We stitched minimal modern abstract paper maquettes the first day, then translated them into small modern fabric quilts on the second day. 🪡 Lovely results!
I’m so lucky to do what I do. My heart is full! ❤️

This is my entry for the QuiltCon 2024 Windham Artisan Cotton Fabric Challenge. Participants were supplied with this color selection from @windhamfabrics — curated by @jacquietps — and given free reign to use 3-6 colors. I used them all, but kept the focus on one. 💙💚💙🩵💙💜💙🩷
I’m happy! The fabric is buttery-soft and lovely to sew.
My inspiration came from the super thin petals of thistle flowers.

Sewing tip: who needs a laser to square up a quilt Sewing tip: who needs a laser to square up a quilt?!? 🪡
Just grab a ball of cotton string, four glass head pins, and a square ruler.
After blocking your quilt, place the pins at the approximate corners, then guide the white string around the perimeter.
Use the ruler (or even just a sheet of white letter paper) to square up the corners, making adjustments and measuring the edges so they are the dimensions you want.
Last step: use a long ruler placed next to the white string, and trim!
I always stay-stitch the trimmed edges 1/8” from the raw edges. Then put my binding on.
Ta-da! No high tech gadgetry needed. ⚡️
